New Art Projects

I'm working on a few new art projects. I was just back in Billings for an art show at the Yellowstone Country Club. The show was great and I wanted to put up a few videos of some of my new work. I finally got a chance to produce a freestanding waterfall that is portable and height adjustable. It's also built on a curve! The idea is that the viewer shouldn't be able to take in the whole image all at once. Future pieces will be bigger and more curved so that when you're standing in the middle of the image you'll be fully immersed in the scene in front of you. The video should make a little more sense. The waterfall in the image is called Mossbrae Falls. It's in northern CA and the image you see in the video is made of nearly 300 images so the resolution is tack sharp all the way through. It could actually be printed somewhere around 40 feet long without any loss of resolution!

Ryan and Bonnie Fox were great! We were all a little nervous about the weather. The day was super hot and there were huge storm clouds on the horizon. It looked like the whole outdoor thing might not really work out.

About a half an hour before the ceremony the wind started blowing harder and the rain started coming down... For about 15 minutes the rain came down hard but just like that it cleared up. The temperature dropped down to a pleasant level and it smelled amazing. The ceremony went off without a hitch. The rest of the night was perfect. It rained a little later but it didn't stop anybody on the dance floor!

Kelley and Kile's Wedding

I had a great time hanging out with Kelley and her family in Virginia for her wedding. The house was beautifully restored and actually housed a general during the civil war. We really lucked out with the weather and had a beautiful day all around. Here's some pics from the settup the day before the wedding.

The ceremony was beautiful but I really liked the shots we got after. The light was beautiful and the old trees really gave the place a nice ambience.

Kelleys mom got a trampoline just for these shots. Lots of fun!

We had a great party the night before the wedding. Kelley was the life of the party and a wonderful hostess. Here's a couple shots of everybody spassing out on the dance floor. Good times...

All the leaves are changing color again. It's amazing how fast the summer has flown by! I wish the fall could last longer. I'll be out shooting all week trying to find the most beautiful fall foliage.

In Search of Green Things

I know I'm way over due to put up a blog but man o man have I made a mess for myself! After my last show I packed up the van and headed north along the coast. It's been a few months and I have another 7,500 miles on the van and a little over 60,000 new pics. It's been a nightmare trying to organize and process everything... But after everything I'm really happy with the resulting images. Here's a few of them. The more I travel the more I'm amazed by the gorgeous wet places we have here in the states.

Beverly Hills Art Walk

This was my 5th Affaire in the Gardens Show in Beverly Hills and it was the best one yet! We had a great turnout and I sold more than half of the pieces I was showing!!! Here's a couple pics of the booth. I have video that I'm trying to figure out how to upload as well so that will be up shortly. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported my work, I look forward to seeing you all again at future shows.

Waterfalls

I'm finally starting my waterfall book project!!! I'm scouring California to find all all of her magical waterfalls. Over the next few weeks I'm going to try to find around 50 waterfalls to shoot. I already have about 15 and it's turning into a rather amazing adventure. I'm living in a van so I'm completely mobile! What a great way to see the world...

Spring in So Cal

Over the course of the last few weeks I've seen some pretty amazing sights. I've been driving all over. Up the coast and over to Yosemite. Everything is alive with color. All the grass is emerald green and the flowers are ridiculous. I can't wait to start the big drive back to Montana and start organizing all of these pics. I'll be leaving LA in about a week and spending about 2 weeks on the road. Here's a couple screenshots to sample what's to come.

Spring in Los Angeles

I've been back in LA now for about 2 weeks. The gallery show is going great! Lots of good feedback and I'm meeting some cool people. I've been shooting quite a bit on this trip as well so here are a few screenshots of what I'm working on.

The hills are alive with green. It's been a wet winter and everything is starting to explode with growth.

There's even quite a bit of lupine flowering in the hills right now. It's still pretty early in the season for much else.

G2 Gallery Show

Here's some pics of my progress for my upcoming art show. I'm showing these at the G2 Gallery in Venice Beach CA on the 27th of March! I'll have around 20 framed images ready by the time the show rolls around. I'm doing everything by myself, this is the first time I haven't used a framer to produce a show for me! Progress has been touch and go. Two steps forward and one step back but the persistence is starting to pay off and I'm gradually streamlining my process.

These first pics are a set of macro orchid photos. They float inside the seamless frames.

Glammis

This was an awesome trip! Me and Brit had a great time and amazing weather. We really lucked out and got to the dunes before they were all tracked up by ATV's.

While Brit was running from one dune to another I had time to shoot some portraits of the sand. It was spectacular to watch the patterns change as the sun rose!

Painted Hills

Located in central Oregon, the painted hills are a part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This amazing formation was created from oxidized mineral deposits found in heavily eroded volcanic ash layers. Me and sis spent a good part of the day exploring this alien landscape. It's been fun going through the pictures and finding interesting crops from all of the angles I shot from. All of these images are stitched together from many pics and the full sized files are filled with some pretty amazing details.

Sitka Alaska

I was in Sitka over Thanksgiving last year. I was invited to do a gallery opening at a yoga studio. The weather could have been better but what do you expect in Alaska in the winter? Most of the days were pretty gray and rainy so it made shooting pretty difficult. I got quite a few decent shots while I was there nonetheless. This first image is pretty much what it looked like the whole time.

Ironwood is a new sub division in Billings MT. It's nestled in a really pretty valley on the west end. This was a fun night perched up on the side of a cliff waiting for the right light. You can get this view from the top of Phipps Park.

Here's a project I've wanted to spend more time on for years. I got a chance to visit a giant orchid farm in Santa Barbara before my last show. There was a huge variety of plants on display and they didn't mind me taking photos. I love tweaking the colors and bringing out the amazing tones and contrast in these already gorgeous flowers.

This is my digital diary. When I'm working I take screenshots when I like what I have on my desktop. This is kind of a way to visualize the process that I go through during editing and retouching. The first few are different water textures...

I think this could potentially be a really beautiful tryptich. There's about a million different color combinations.

I'm getting a little overwhelmed with this project. So many textures in water. It's never ending.

Hillcrest Property

This is an architectural project I shot for Mark David Levine. He's a really talented landscape designer based out of Los Angeles. Check out his web site here Mark David Levine . He enhances high end real estate in Beverly Hills with his beautiful landscaping. We met at the Beverly Hills Art walk last October. I've only shot a couple of his properties so far but we have a lot more projects in the works. He's talking about putting a book together! My work feels like it's getting more eclectic all the time but I'm really enjoying the challenges that come with shooting different subject matter.

Burney Falls

Burney falls was a great find in northern California.
These beautiful cascades come right out of the rock wall from the river above. I was here in late August and the water below the falls was actually warm enough to swim in. I was up at 4am to make sure I could get my shots before the sun hit the water and messed up my exposure. Definitely a magical experience that I would recommend to anyone.

This is a relatively new project I've been working on. I've been fascinated by moving water for a long time and I finally decided to really focus on water as the entire subject of the image.

These panoramas are actually multiple images stitched together to create lots of detail for large prints.
These single images are full of great details. Especially when you see the full sized file.

A Beautiful Hike in the Crazys

Talk about the middle of nowhere... In about 3 hours of driving on these back country dirt roads I only saw one other vehicle. The wildlife was amazing, I saw Cranes, deer, elk and quite a few raptors.

I stopped at a gated dude ranch at the base of the trailhead and talked with one of the workers to get some info on the hike. He told me there was a spectacular waterfall about 3 miles up the trail. I had gotten a really late start and dilly dallied along the way so it was already afer 4 when I got started. I figured I could easily do a six mile round trip before the sun went down so off I went. I set a pretty brisk pace but ultimately I wasn't fast enough and I had to turn back because of the fading light. I wasn't too worried though because the hike up had been so beautiful and I wanted to have enough time to shoot on the way back down. Almost immediately on the way back I saw this rainbow over the river. There are truly moments when everything in the world seems right.

There were more than a few amazing meadows filled with colors.

Today I did a shoot with my sisters personal trainer George. It was a fun day, pretty low key seeing as I couldn't really take a bad picture. George was really easy to work with and I think we all had a good time. I'm sure I'll be using him more in the future.

Crazy Mountain Hike

While I was in Bozeman, my friend John and I had a free day to check out one of our favorite places called Big Timber Canyon. It's kind of off the beaten path and you really have to know where you're going to get there. You have to go through 2 gates through dude ranches to get to the parking lot at the base of the trailhead but once you get there spectacular waterfalls are just a short hike away. Here's a map to the parking lot.

After about a 10 minute hike we arrived at the first of many large waterfalls. This was the largest one on the hike but when we got there it was raining so hard I didn't want to get my camera wet so I'll have to include pics later on in another post.

It's been a really wet spring in Montana so the water level was really high and the volume of water thundering over the drop was impressive. Later on in the summer when the water level is a little more manageable and a little warmer you can actually jump off a roughly 60 ft cliff into a pool at the base of this falls. If you're a little crazy...

We followed the river upstream past waterfall after waterfall. Here's a few of them.

Another really cool thing about this hike is the natural waterslide. If you stay on the trail for about a mile there's a bridge crossing over the river. If you come later in the summer you can get in the water above the bridge and the water will actually carry you over the polished river bottom for about 2o yards and over a medium cascade into a pool below the bridge. It's definitely worth checking out! Here's a pic of the top part of the slide. The second pic is the pool that you land in under the slide. The water was way to high and frigid for us to slide on this trip but I'm looking forward to hitting it again later on this summer.

The Big Sky State

Montana is alive and well! It's been years since I've been home. I finally got the chance to head back for a month in June. I was amazed at how green everything was. It's funny that it took me a trip like this to feel truly homesick for the first time since I left. I was on the road quite a bit and everywhere I looked there were emerald vistas as far as the eye can see. The Big Sky state definitely lived up to it's name. The cloud formations were incredible!

The mountains were impressive enough on their own but throw the clouds into the mix and it was truly breathtaking.
